New England is known for harsh winters, which comes with the possibility of your home pipes freezing or bursting. While some of us enjoy the colder months, others leave and head for warmer climates. We've made freezing pipe prevention easy for you with these tips whether you're staying for the winter or heading South.
Areas in your home that don't get heat will need to be properly insulated, reducing freezing drastically.
Consider foam pipe insulation for areas such as crawl spaces, attics, basement, and garages in moderately cold climates.
For severe climates you will want to go with thermostatically controlled heat tape or heating cable, which can be costly, but worth it.
If there are waterlines in your garage make sure to keep the door closed.
When temperatures are below normal let cold water drip from the faucet.
Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night.
Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines.
Remove, drain, and store outdoor hoses.
Close all inside valves supplying outdoor water.
Set your furnace no lower than 55 degrees
Shut off the main water supply and drain the system by opening faucets and flushing toilets.
If your home is located in an extremely cold climate you may want to consider a plumber to inspect and drain the system.
