How to Prevent Your Pipes From Freezing

The winter months are right around the corner, so make sure you take preventive steps to ensure that your pipes don’t freeze! We all know water expands when frozen, this additional pressure is likely to cause breaks and bursting in your plumbing. Fortunately, this costly problem is preventable by following these costly steps:

  • Drain the water from your swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines.
  • Disconnect and drain all of your outdoor hoses. Close all of the inside valves, but keep the outside valves open so any remaining water in the pipe can expand without making the pipe burst.
  • Use pipe insulation or heating tape to wrap pipes that are closest to the exterior walls or in crawl spaces.
  • Keep the temperature of your home at 68 degrees or higher
  • Make sure to close all windows that are near water pipes. Wind drafts can cause pipes to freeze.
  • Insulate the walls in your home
  • Shut off the water supply valves to your washing machine, if you are not going to be home for a lengthy amount of time.

These are all easy ways to maintain your plumbing, but sometimes we have to deal with frozen pipes regardless of the steps we take. In our next post, we’ll cover what to do in this event!
